According to local history, during the harsh winter of 1777–1778 at Valley Forge, American revolutionary military officer Friedrich Von Steuben designated the tavern to be a secret black powder munitions stash for Continental Army couriers during their fight for independence.
Black Powder Tavern in Wayne continues the revolution by introducing several seasonal happy hour beverages and specials, which roll out this week.
“We love this time of year at the tavern,” says general manager Bernie Bottmeyer. “Our staff researched the hottest trends in mixology to come up with several new handcrafted cocktails which pair sips of the season with our tantalizing menu. We’ve also recently introduced beer and spirit flights to give our guests an all-inclusive restaurant experience.”
Take a look at the specials Black Powder Tavern is serving up this fall:
- Growlers: Fill up growlers of your favorite brews, including stouts, tripels, lagers and IPAs, for half off on Sundays and Mondays! You can always see what’s currently pouring on BPT’s Untappd page. Take advantage of the best wing specials (beginning at noon on Sunday, in the bar area only) as you watch all the games on large screen TVs throughout the bar.
- Flights: Bar patrons who want to experiment with several spirits now have flight options of .75-oz. pours of 3 or 4 spirits such as Clase Azul Reposado, Stoli Elite, Highland Park 15 Year and Whistle Pig Old World. New beer flights include the freshest pours of the rotating draft list that include local and specialty selections.
- Historic happy hour specials: Black Powder Tavern hosts two happy hours: Monday through Friday from 5–7 p.m., and a late night happy hour from 9–10 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday. During these times, enjoy $6 house wines and $5 beers (all drafts!), as well as 20% off all other liquor, bottled beer and wines by the glass (happy hour specials apply to the bar area only). The tavern is also adding new seasonal martinis to the menu, just $6 each during happy hour:
French Martini
Pinnacle Vanilla Vodka and Chambord serve as the base for this classic blended sipper. Tangy pineapple juice and a zesty lemon twist garnish brighten up the glass.
Pairing suggestion: Indulge in the Lafayette onion soup, with caramelized onion and melted Emmental and Gruyère cheeses.
Pumpkin Spice Martini
Check out this pumpkin patch-worthy cocktail with vanilla vodka, Baileys Irish Cream, a splash of pumpkin liqueur and a dusting of cinnamon.
Pairing suggestion: Keep it subtle with the tortellini pesto pasta dish: ricotta-filled tortellini, arugula pesto cream, roasted red peppers, cherry tomatoes and goat cheese.
Caramel Apple Martini
We’ll try anything that has salted caramel in it, and this vodka, apple juice and sweet caramel-rimmed glass has everything we want in a seasonal martini.
Pairing suggestion: The gooey short rib grilled cheese defines comfort food with marsala-braised short rib, sautéed onions and sharp cheddar on crunchy griddled artisan sourdough bread.
Washington Apple Martini
We cannot tell a lie—this mixture of Crown Royal, sour apple pucker and cranberry juice with a cherry garnish is truly delicious.
Pairing suggestion: Tuck into the housemade black bean vegetarian burger with roasted vegetables, portobello mushrooms and pepper jack cheese, topped with spicy chipotle mayo. Extra napkins, please!
Pineapple Upside-Down Martini
You’ll flip over this vanilla vodka, pineapple juice and grenadine cocktail with a cherry garnish.
Pairing suggestion: We’re certain that the special fish of the day along with this drink will make your meal more than memorable.
Key Lime Martini
Hang on to sultry summer for just a bit longer with this whipped vodka, Cruzan coconut rum, key lime and pineapple juice martini, which completes the motif with a crushed graham cracker glass rim.
Pairing suggestion: Sink your fork into the flaky oven-roasted cedar plank salmon with fresh thyme in wine butter sauce for the perfect combination.
