PA Preferred Spotlight: Revolution Bees

PA Preferred® Revolution Bees is taking Southeastern Pennsylvania by swarm. Its artisanal honey and mead products bear the flavors of the region and reinforce the sweetness of consuming local food. The company is owned by three beekeepers, who manage swarms, operate farm stands, markets and festivals, and work to educate the public on sustainable beekeeping.

We spoke with Walter Talunas, who values the PA Preferred program for highlighting Pennsylvania-produced goods. Revolution Bees produces raw honey, infused honey, honey creme, meads and honey wines. All of this is made in Delaware and Chester Counties and sold at permanent farm stands, farmers markets, botanical gardens, restaurants and special events throughout the SEPA region.

Revolution Bees’ original honey product, raw wildflower honey, remains a fan-favorite. It reflects the flavors of the nearby flowers that the bees tapped for nectar, often on the very property where the honey is sold. This honey is never heated and is minimally filtered to preserve its natural nutrients and quality. Revolution Bees also offers infused honeys, like hot honey made with smoked ghost peppers, that pairs brilliantly with soft cheeses, pepperoni pizza and chicken wings, and bourbon barrel-aged honey that brings a dish of vanilla ice cream to new heights. Its raw creme honeys are thick and spreadable, with flavors like raspberry lemon and cinnamon.

The guys of Revolution Bees have also developed two tasty mead lines, one traditional and one modern. Talunas says, “People love that it’s local, and our meads are light, dry and refreshing.” Indeed, all of their meads defy any syrupy perceptions with their crisp, dry and delicate flavors. Its Wildflower Dry has subtle floral notes and mild acidity while the Wildflower Semi Sweet has a touch more honey. The company’s Buzz line includes canned and draft carbonated mead that’s fermented, refreshing and gluten-free, with flavors like strawberry and lemon basil.

The Revolution Bees beekeepers also pour their energy into consumer education, from showcasing the value of bee-friendly vegetation to explaining what mead is — and is not. They participate in numerous events, including markets and beer-and-wine festivals to sell and promote their products.
