Pour Richard’s Coffee Company Brings Third Wave Coffee to the Main Line

In December of 2013, Richard and Mindyjane Berman decided it was time to bring Third Wave Coffee to the Main Line with Pour Richard’s Coffee Company. The Main Line natives have opened up shop in a tucked away, mostly residential area of Devon.

Pour Richard’s intent is to ditch sugar and cream laden concoctions in favor of small-batch, single-origin coffee. Richard has been roasting for ten years, and continues to do so on location. Coffee education is key for the Bermans, who are doing weekly cuppings every Wednesday from 1-3 p.m. At each cupping, coffees are creatively paired with various foods such as beer, cheese, or chocolate.

A huge selling point of Pour Richard’s is the state-of-the-art brewing and roasting equipment in-house, including their economically friendly green roaster, Synesso Cyncra espresso machine, and Bunn Trifecta single cup coffee brewer. Berman leaves very little to human error, and has everything from sourcing to roasting to brewing down to a science. In addition to roasting green, the shop boasts little to no plastic products, creating a sustainable environment. Pour Richard’s aims to deliver fresh coffee beans that don’t sit on the shelf longer than ten days, and they also aim to educate customers who normally drink frappuccino-like drinks that there are other options available.

While at the shop, I was given a Cubano: an espresso drink made with steamed condensed milk and brown sugar. The drink had similar texture to a latte, and was sweet enough for someone who doesn’t traditionally drink black coffee or espresso.

Pour Richard’s focus is on re-calibrating the preferences of coffee drinkers, and showing them that the coffee bean itself can be multi-faceted, and that different origins yield many different flavors just in the black coffee it produces. Pour Richard’s prides itself in its twelve single-origin coffees in stock, each with a distinctly beautiful flavor profile. Even for non-coffee drinkers, the shop offers handmade Italian soda, teas, hot cocoa, and food service with pastries and sandwiches.
