PA Eats is a proud media sponsor of Phoenixville Food Festival.
The second-ever Phoenixville Food Truck Festival is scheduled to hit downtown this Saturday, May 3, noon–6 p.m. With an incredible mix of mobile kitchens rolling into town, we decided to get up-close and personal with local food truck champ, The Sunflower Truck Stop.
Chef/owner George Bieber’s alternative yellow-hued truck holds a special place in our hearts, as he made his public debut at Phoenixville’s Farmers’ Market. Full scoop below about what he’ll be serving this weekend, why he took the food truck plunge, and even, what fellow truck he’s excited about taste-testing too!
Meet The Sunflower Truck Stop
What will you be serving for the 2014 May Phoenixville Food Festival and why should attendees make sure they don’t miss it?
We will be serving our amazingly popular Crab Dip Grilled Cheese Sandwich with cheddar, gouda, spinach and artichoke in addition to some new favorites: Grilled Beef Brisket & Cheese with caramelized Sriracha mustard onions; Chickpea Pierogies with brown butter, lemon, almonds and caper sour cream; and, Bacon Salad with chunks of peppercorn bacon tossed with red pepper ranch, local greens and cashews.
How long have you been in the food truck business and what inspired you to “take the plunge”?
The Sunflower Truck Stop hit the streets in August, 2012 (our debut was at the Phoenixville Farmers’ Market) as an extension of our brick-and-mortar restaurant, Shorty’s Sunflower Café, which opened way back in 1996. For years, due to the popularity of the café, customers would always question when we would be opening a second location. The small business, hands-on style of the food truck business was a nice compliment to what we do at the café and being mobile would allow us to branch out to many different surrounding areas without being locked into a second location.
Did you participate in last year’s festival?
Yes, the Sunflower Truck Stop was part of the festival! I also hope that my participation (then as Treasurer and Membership head, and now as President) in the Philly Mobile Food Association was beneficial to gathering the outstanding assortment of trucks that participated in last year’s festival as well.
Why are you excited to return?
Last year was a beautiful day and the turnout was tremendous. There is such an air of excitement at festivals like this and we love to be a part of the energy!
Take a look at the current list of vendors. Which participant are you excited to sample or which one are you already very fond of and why (try not to choose yourself)?
There are a lot of great trucks participating this year. Many of Philly’s most popular trucks are making the trip out to Phoenixville. Some of my favorites are Sum Pig, Gigi & Big R, Undrgrnd Donuts and the Surf & Turf Truck. They all serve outstanding food and are operated by super dedicated, fun and friendly entrepreneurs. I am excited to try Pbon’s as well. They are one of the newest members of the PMFA so I am curious to try their goods.
Outside of this food festival, where/when can we find your food truck offerings?
Our favorite and only regular public location this season: the Phoenixville Farmers’ Market, every Saturday (except May 17th), 9 a.m.-1 p.m. We offer an ever-changing assortment of exciting, seasonal food, primarily sourced from local growers.
