Whether you visit for happy hour or brunch, lunch or dinner, chances are your experience at The First Post will have you looking forward to your next trip to York.
The Ambience
Recent renovations achieved a saloon-style atmosphere with classic charm. With a wide, open bar area complete with plenty of tables and booths, the remainder of the seating arrangements are sectioned off, creating a cozy feel. Second-floor seating provides a bird’s-eye view of the open bar area along with a great perspective of the architectural details in every corner. Two separate party rooms are also hidden away on the second floor and are available for private events. The entire locale is decorated beautifully with historical portraits and other nods to American history. It is a true work of art to be admired.
Happy Hour and the Tap List
Happy Hour is a highlight here and is celebrated daily. Monday through Friday, enjoy half-price drafts from a large offering on tap and a $5 drink menu. Saturdays feature wines by the glass for half price or $3 sangrias. Sundays are for mimosas, bellinis and bloody marys, all $3. Feeling a little adventurous? Order some grilled octopus or lamb meatballs to go with your drink. Drafts vary weekly and happy hour times vary by day, so check out the website for details.
The Menu
Changes to the menu occur seasonally. The current winter offerings promise culinary satisfaction. Keep it classic with a soul-warming crock of French onion soup or begin the meal with a plate of charred brussel sprouts, bacon and apple relish. Scotch eggs are often a hit and start a meal off right. Seafood is a specialty at The First Post and is displayed through diverse selections. Oven-baked crab cakes are a popular choice, served with grilled asparagus or in sandwich form. The fish and chips and pan-seared rockfish with brown butter basmati rice are spot on.
For those wanting more turf than surf, you are not left behind. Picture a hearty serving of shepherd’s pie with cheddar-baked root vegetable mash or a ribeye with truffle butter mashed potatoes. On the lighter side, take a look at the salmon harvest salad, complemented deliciously with crunchy walnuts, roasted squash and a tart apple-cider vinaigrette.
A Few Tips
First, go hungry. This is not a restaurant where you want to skip a course. Second, the appetizer menu is impressive. It might be a good idea to head in with a group of friends and share a round of starters to get a better understanding of the cuisine. And finally, there is something at The First Post for everyone. From the not-so-adventurous to the hard-to-please, it would be hard not to find something that puts a smile on your face.
