Black Powder Tavern’s Team Dishes on the Brand New Drink Menu

We recently shared the great news about Black Powder Tavern’s brand new drink menu. With a wine list sporting 50+ white, red and sparkling wines available by the glass and bottle, edgy cocktails, flights of spirits and an ever-expanding draft and bottle list of craft beer, Black Powder Tavern is the perfect place for happy hour with friends and co-workers or to settle in with your date for a delicious meal expertly paired with a drink or two.

We chatted with some of the staff at Black Powder Tavern, who shared their thoughts about the menu and some favorite new drinks:

Megan Rodenhiser, Bartender

“My favorite drink to make right now is Penicillin, the perfect antidote for what ails you, whether you like scotch or think you don’t care for it at all. It is a layered drink—the first layer is shaken with honey-ginger syrup and then a second scotch is layered over top. It has a perfect smoky nose with a sweet finish.”

Ronald Risch, Bar Manager

“Our drink book has a list of our standard drafts that don’t change, but we rotate as many as 18 of our draft lines at all times. The cool part about our beer program is no matter where you are, you can always check our current drafts online at Blackpowder.beer. The list is updated the moment we change a draft, so you always know what is on tap.”

Cordelia Bonny, Service Manager

“My favorite new drink is the 007, essentially a boozy version of Orange Fanta. It’s selling really well and will be a great hit this summer on the patio.”

Eric Allen, Chef

“The bomber bottles of Ommegang are all really great, but my favorite pairing is Ommegang Hennepin Farmhouse Ale paired with our Asian wings, spicy short rib tater tots and our new orange-glazed pork belly sliders. A perfect mix to share with your group!”

Phil Cugliotta, General Manager

“For someone trying to work their way into scotch drinking, we offer a Macallan flight of all of the best years, so you can see which one appeals to you the most. Included in the flight are pours of Macallan 10, 12, 15 and 18 Year. For the Macallan experts, we also offer the Macallan Rare Cask, which is a blend including up to 25 Year.

“We have increased our wine list from 38 wines that were pretty standard fare to a much more diverse selection at almost every price point. We now feature more than 50 wines and try to cater to all preferences. A new wine that is very popular is the Cossetti Moscato D’Asti, which is sweet like a Moscato, but bubbly like a Prosecco.

“We have also added several premium wines that available by the bottle only. These include the J Cuvee 20 and Cambria Clone IV Pinot Noir. Both are very desirable wines that you surely won’t find everywhere.”

PA Eats’s Take

With so many drinks to drink and not enough time in the day, we recommend sampling several spirits and ordering the Top Shelf Flight. It features a taste of some of the best spirits around—Clase Azul Reposado Tequila, Stoli Elit Vodka, High Park 15 Year Single Malt and Whistlepig Old World Rye Whiskey.

For beer fans, we suggest you keep an eye on the rotating draft list, but you can never go wrong with sharing bomber bottles of Ommegang with your whole party. Also, check out the offerings from Chimay, both the Premiere Red and the Grand Reserve Blue.

For a perfect cocktail to sip on the patio, we can’t resist the Island Time, made with RumChata Rum Cream, Cruzan Coconut Rum, Coffee Liqueur and Cream. You can also design your own mule cocktail with your choice of EFFEN Dutch Raspberry, Black Cherry, Blood Orange, Green Apple or Unflavored Vodka with ginger beer and lime.
