Untapped – Rogue’s Hazelnut Brown Nectar

On Tap is a regular column featuring our recommendations on the most unique new draft beer offerings from local pubs. Untapped is an occasional column on notable bottled beers.

Our Recommendation: Rogue’s Hazelnut Brown Nectar, 6.2% ABV

Where: Bonefish Grill, 460 W. Lincoln Highway, Edgmont, PA

Since I was meeting my high school friends this week at Bonefish Grill in Edgmont, a restaurant I had not visited before, I thought I would write an On Tap article there. Much to my chagrin, a quick look at the bar revealed they do not have a tap! Sigh.

The beer selection at Bonefish Grill is not lengthy – mostly a small sampling of domestic and imported bottled beers. They did however have two Big Bottle recommendations – Stone Brewery’s Arrogant Bastard Ale and the Rogue Ales’ Hazelnut Brown Nectar.

I chose the Hazelnut Brown Nectar in a 22 oz. bottle for $12.

This is an American Brown Ale but with a hint of the hazelnut taste. It was dark and smooth with just a really nice sweet caramel finish to it. I poured a sampling for a few buddies and even those who tend toward the lighter beers thought it was flavorful.

I’m a real fan of brown ales. Dogfish Head’s Indian Brown Ale is one of my favorite all time brews. This Rogue is similar in texture and taste, but with a few extra flavors thrown in. In my opinion, it doesn’t top the DFH Brown Ale, but it’s an interesting alternative and worthy of a try.

Rogue, which is based out of Newport, Oregon, really makes a great assortment of beers. I reviewed their double chocolate stout a few weeks ago.

Although I was disappointed that Bonefish Grill did not serve tapped beer, I will give them kudos for serving their bottled beer extremely chilled. I wasn’t rushing this 22 oz. bottle, but it came out so cold that I was comfortable in taking my time with this bottle knowing it wasn’t going to be lukewarm toward the end.
