A Hitchhiker’s Guide to the (Phoenixville) Galaxy

I don’t need a t-shirt to let the world know I am a “Phoenixvillian”—I just need you to read this article and do it for me.

Once upon a time, I was fresh out of college, sat down with a buddy over some drinks at the ever-so-hip Moon Saloon (yeah, it was that long ago) and said something along the lines of, “one day, I’m going to leave this one horse town.” Granted, it probably sounded way cooler. Then again, cranberry and vodkas (yup, that guy) were also present, so, you never know.

I was born, raised and at this point, will probably die in Phoenixville, but until the last five or so years, it wasn’t the gravitating hot spot it is today. When I was at Moon Saloon that fine evening, being eaten alive by mosquitos on the outdoor patio, the bars were few and far between. Sure, we had Iron Hill and Sly Fox, but I was yet to become the contentious beer snob, no wait, approachable beer connoisseur, that I am today.

And then it happened, Molly Maguires, PJ Ryans and eventually Bistro on Bridge arrived. Finally, a respectable food and drinking scene in my backyard, where I could enjoy a delicious pint of (name a style of beer here)—only a stone’s throw away. “But what are your top choices in Phoenixville?” you ask. I will tell you.

Bistro on Bridge

210 Bridge Street

I think most of you following Phoenixville Dish religiously, you would agree. It’s not on the Main Line or in an overpopulated college town, but the word is out. Bistro on Bridge is no longer a craft beer secret. And how could it be? Graced with 21 taps and 130 bottle varieties, I never have to drive more than five minutes or walk twenty.

And when you’re a respectable craft beer establishment, you must have a foundation of stellar menu items. Bistro has the best—and I dare you to argue me—wings. I just started to broaden my horizons with their other flavors, and with 21 varieties that you can mix & match, that’s quite the feat, but the Bee Sting remains my go to for a delectable dozen during happy hour. It has a small bite, or yes, sting to them, but nicely balanced with honey flavor.

Recommendation: flight of craft beer and Bee Sting wings

Franco Ristorante

226 Bridge Street

Once upon a time, I was the “Phoenixville by the Slice” guy, and so you may wonder where my favorite spot is for a slice. Well, I have yet to conclude that journey. And yes, every spot was great for their particular reasons, but I always leave Franco’s with not only a great impression, but a lasting one. Quality ingredients, years of experience and heart are what makes Franco’s not only my favorite spot for pizza, pasta and bruschetta, but also a cherished spot in town. It’s no wonder it has been around for 20+ years. We’ve seen pizza places come and go, but Franco Ristorante is here to stay.

Recommendation: Gabriella pizza

Liki

243 Schuylkill Road

Bistro to craft beer is what Liki to sushi is to me. It’s local, BYOB and has sushi so fresh that I would have to hop into my car and drive for miles to find a better spot. Not to mention, it has a much more casual vibe going on than those places in the city. I’m not saying those places are terrible or even bad at all, but with Liki, I can go in there after a hard workout and enjoy an eel roll for lunch without worrying about my attire.

Also, Liki is a great spot for huge groups. The Hibachi Room, if not already filled, is loads of fun for parties of five and up. Watching the chef do his thang at the hibachi station is always a great time. Pop open some bottles of wine, it’s Cirque du Soleil with knives and forks. Who isn’t wide eyed with amazement when they see that onion volcano during the finale?

Recommendation: Rainbow roll or just about anything with avocado

Sly Fox Brewhouse & Eatery

520 Kimberton Road

This is where my craft beer journey began. When I rate a Sly Fox beer on Untappd, I give them an extra Bottle Cap, if not a fiver already, for this is where I discovered hops for the first time.

The Pikeland Pils, Phoenix Pale Ale and 113 IPA? Not only favorites of mine, but naming conventions from parts of Phoenixville! How could Sly Fox not make this list? And let’s not forget, these fellas not only brought craft in cans to the East Coast, but our beloved zip code of 19460.

Sly Fox has earned their spot in this community. They throw the most insane events in addition to brewing outstanding beers. I can’t wait to see what these guys do next. How about O’Reilly Stout in a can? Who’s with me Stout fans?

Recommendation: Any one of their flagship beers and their grilled chicken burrito

Artisans

234 Bridge Street

When I want to enjoy a cup of Joe with a side of Wi-Fi, I want to hear myself think and be as comfortable as possible. I could do this at home, but Artisans has created a relaxed environment, filled with tasteful décor and just screams local. There are literally shelves and walls filled with artistic talent from around town.

I’ll definitely support Artisans a hundred times over before I grab a corporate cup of overpriced coffee. And that’s saying a lot since my brother works for them.

If you’re not in the mood for a brew, grab your Ross, Phoebe and Chandler. Grab a couch at Artisans and have the staff nuke you a brownie in the microwave.

Recommendation: Old-fashioned cup of coffee however you like it with one of their brownies
