The Official Scoop on Yum Yum Yogurt

Yum Yum Yogurt officially opened its doors to Phoenixville in mid-March, just in the nick of time for Spring. And even though Punxsutawney Phil’s prediction wasn’t exactly what we hoped, I think everyone’s on board with 10 flavors of frozen awesomeness. Did I mention the 35-plus toppings they offer?

Come First Fridays, I’m pretty sure this place is going to be hoppin’ with those seeking an after dinner delight, especially since Yum Yum is extending their hours until 11 p.m. those evenings. I mean, come on now, their logo IS a smiley face with yogurt for hair. How can you resist?

But you’re probably wondering with all the spots to grab dessert, why here? Well, Yum Yum is no run of the mill ice cream parlor. As a matter of fact, Yum Yum Yogurt is a healthier alternative to ice cream. The yogurt itself is from Honey Hill Farms. The yogurt is available in a variety of low fat flavors. In addition, yogurt is a great source of calcium and protein. You can get the full health 411 on their website.

I’m sure anyone reading this is no stranger to self-serve ice cream, especially if you’ve been to any run of the mill buffet. There’s not much “re-inventing the wheel” here, but what Yum Yum DOES offer is variety and lots of it. Plus a spread of distinct flavors, but we’ll get to that in a bit.

The experience begins when you head directly to the back. You can choose between a traditional paper bowl OR liven things up with a waffle bowl. Directly behind them are three simple instructions on the wall:

  1. Choose your yogurt
  2. Choose your toppings
  3. Weigh and pay (49 cents per ounce)

There are 10 choices in the yogurt department divided among five sections. Each section contains three handles, with the center handle providing a swirled combo between the left and right. I assume the flavors are strategically placed so the combinations work well together. The flavors and pairs are as follows:

Dreamy Dark Chocolate and Sea Salt Caramel Pretzel
Old Fashioned Peanut Butter and Espresso
Cupcake and Cookies N’ Cream
Tahitian Vanilla and Birthday Cake
Wild Strawberry and Tropical Sorbet

Everything seemed enticing and trust me, a swirl of Cupcake and Cookies N’ Cream sounded amazing (definitely for next time), but there was just something about Sea Salt Caramel Pretzel I just couldn’t ignore. With little hesitation, and a half-filled bowl, I shimmied on over to the toppings. I’m guessing this is where that second “Yum” in “Yum Yum” comes into play?

I didn’t want to go too crazy on the toppings and decided to stay with the Chocolate Pretzel theme. Along with Chocolate Cake Crumbs and Brownie Bites, I included Pretzel Pieces to accent the yogurt flavors, which you’ll find located back by the bowls. Oh and of course, you can’t forget a Maraschino cherry … or cherries. Hey, it’s my dessert, so two it is!

By the time I was all done, I headed to the register where they weighed my dessert. Word to the wise for you moms and dads out there. Help your kids make those sundaes. Monitor how much they’re loading on with the toppings. Yum Yum has had their share of surprised parents during check out time, but hey, who can blame these kids with all these varieties? I admire their enthusiasm!

Don’t let this discourage you, though. I’m not saying Yum Yum is expensive. They are very reasonable and amazing with their selections. It’s just no different than picking out produce. The more you grab, the more it adds up for sure. If you are up to the challenge (and can avoid making a mess) you could attempt cramming all the flavors into one bowl. I doubt, however, you could load on all those toppings.

How does the flavor of the yogurt fare in comparison to regular ice cream? For starters, this is indeed on the lighter scale. Minus the toppings, the yogurt itself isn’t too rich or sweet. Not that heavy either. You get the sense Yum Yum Yogurt is indeed on the healthier side, but certainly doesn’t lack flavor.

I’d say the Sea Salt Caramel Pretzel is the best way to go for first time visitors. Something about “Sea Salt” and “Pretzel” as a flavor is very appealing. According to the employees, it’s the most popular of the bunch. I could enjoy this one without any toppings. Your taste buds will pick up the bitterness of the Sea Salt and the sweetness of a Caramel-Covered Pretzel. I’m definitely a fan! Next time around, I will try the Dreamy Dark Chocolate & Sea Salt Caramel Pretzel swirl.

Did it get better during my trip? Absolutely. They handed me a loyalty card; after 9 stamps, the 10th one’s on them! After indulging my inspired creation, I’m pretty sure I’ll be enjoying my freebie in no time. If you’ve been to Yum Yum’s, I’d love some recommendations. If I can get at least seven, I vow to try them all!
