You’ve all heard that Philadelphia and cheesesteaks go hand-in-hand, but there’s another popular yet lesser-known sandwich around town—the Schmitter.
This sliced steak and salami sandwich, which originated and can be found at McNally’s Tavern, includes cheese, tomato and onion, all grilled together before being set on a kaiser roll. The “secret” Schmitter sauce comprises ketchup, worcestershire sauce, relish and Russian dressing. Wondering how the name was chosen? It was bestowed in honor of the man who helped to create the sandwich, Dennis Krenech, who was known by a nickname—the Schmitter.
