There’s a new brewery coming to Philly in 2017—Triple Bottom Brewing Company, founded by partners Kyle Carney, Tess Hart and Bill Popwell. It has a unique concept—creating a craft brewery with a conscience.
The idea seems simple enough. Triple Bottom Brewing Company’s plan is to create great beer using local ingredients in order to support small Pennsylvania farmers and showcase the refreshing flavors of Pennsylvania produce.
They also plan to hire employees from the local community who may face barriers to employment such as language, incarceration or homelessness. By hiring within the community, Triple Bottom hopes to help workers develop the skills and confidence they need to build stable, meaningful careers.
Triple Bottom Brewing Company doesn’t have an address just yet, but the plan is for it to be within a few blocks of City Hall. They chose Philadelphia because it has the fastest growing millennial population and the highest poverty rate of any major U.S. city. The neighborhoods near City Hall bridge communities of young professionals who seek a social scene with a social mission and communities of long-term residents who are looking for the chance to improve their livelihoods and their communities.
Triple Bottom Brewing is crowdfunding to meet their financial goals. They just passed their first goal of $25,000 (with some great perks!), but now they’ve created a stretch goal of $30,000 by New Year’s Day. There are some great new perks available, including a chance to brew a beer in honor of your favorite not-for-profit with proceeds benefiting that organization. Additionally, anyone who donates $50 will get a champagne bottle of their special founders’ edition beer.
