National Beer Lover’s Day Celebration (Sept. 5–10) + What’s on Tap at Black Powder Tavern

September 7 is National Beer Lover’s Day! For all of you ale aficionados and lager enthusiasts out there, there’s no better place to celebrate the occasion than at the historic Black Powder Tavern in Wayne. And since one day just isn’t enough, Black Powder Tavern is getting the party started on Tuesday, September 5, and keeping it going through Sunday, September 10.

A favorite brewery will be highlighted each day, with special food pairings from the seasonally updated menu designed to enhance select drafts. Representatives from the day’s featured brewery will stop by in the evenings, but samples and giveaways will be available all day.

We don’t want to give away too much ahead of time, but below is a sneak peek of the brewery lineup:

And beer lovers: The good news is you don’t need an event to make a trip to the restaurant worthwhile. Black Powder Tavern always has an extensive—and ever-evolving—beer list, with a particular emphasis on local craft beers. According to general manager Bernie Bottmeyer, “We pride ourselves on our craft beer selection. We also try to get involved with the local beer community as much as possible and feature local breweries that truly hold some of the best craft beers in the United States.”

Here are some of the standout beers currently in rotation at Black Powder Tavern:

Conshohocken Type A IPA

Brewed only a few miles from Black Powder Tavern at the Conshohocken Brewing Company, Type A is a West Coast IPA made with a blend of Citra, Mosaic and Simcoe hops, as well as pale and Pilsner malts. It’s an excellent choice for those who like their beer on the hoppy side.

River Horse Black Powder Tripel

Black Powder Tavern

River Horse Brewing Company, based in Ewing, N.J., has dedicated this beer to the Black Powder Tavernit even customized the tap handle! Needless to say, it’s a big seller. Bottmeyer advises that drinkers will “notice a unique aromatic nose with a hint of vanilla esters, which comes from the Belgian ale yeast. Tripel Horse has a big body and rich mouthfeel, and finishes mostly dry with only a touch of sweetness. If you shy away from some of the sweeter Belgian ales, we think you will enjoy this one.”

Sterling Pig Pata Negra

A local beer brewed by Sterling Pig in Media, this Schwarzbier is malty, smooth and just a little bit sweet with notes of chocolate and coffee. If you’re intimidated by heavy stouts and porters, this just might just be the dark beer for you.

Boulevard Tank 7 Farmhouse Ale

Okay, so the Tank 7 Farmhouse Ale isn’t local—it hails from St. Louis, Mo. But with a beer this good, you won’t mind expanding your horizons. Bottmeyer describes the ale as “beginning with a big surge of fruity aromatics and grapefruit-hoppy notes” and adds that “the flavor of this complex, straw-colored ale tapers off to a peppery, dry finish.”
