In case you missed this delicious news, last week the Ultimate Birthday Cake was unveiled at Philadelphia’s historic Reading Terminal Market. The sky-high cake was made with 160 eggs, 15 pounds of buttercream frosting and weighed 71.5 pounds. It contained 10 different flavors, layered from top to bottom in order of popularity according to a nationwide survey asking Americans to rank top birthday cake flavors.
“The Ultimate Birthday Cake is our gift to this great food city and its suburbs,” said Kristina Erfe Pines, founder and publisher of Spoonful Magazine, the Wynnewood-based, independent home cooking magazine that conducted the survey in celebration of its first year of publication. “We owe our first year of success to the incredible support we’ve received from our Philadelphia community.”
The Ultimate Birthday Cake was baked by Elizabeth Halen and her award-winning team at Flying Monkey Bakery, a popular destination for locals and tourists at Reading Terminal Market. It took 12 hours to bake, plus 12 pounds of locally sourced butter. The Ultimate Birthday Cake’s eight layers were as follows, according to the Spoonful Magazine survey of 500 people who were asked to rank top birthday cake flavors:
- Chocolate
- Cheesecake
- Chocolate Chip
- Vanilla
- Red Velvet
- Marble
- Carrot
- Lemon
- Coconut (not included in cake to preserve structural integrity)
- Funfetti (not included in cake to preserve structural integrity)
The grand unveiling occurred on Thursday, March 30, in the Center Court seating area across from Flying Monkey Bakery. More than 300 visitors enjoyed complimentary cake once it was sliced into hundreds of pieces immediately after the unveiling.
“There’s a lot of hometown pride baked into this cake,” said Elizabeth Halen, owner of Flying Monkey Bakery and president of the Reading Terminal Market Merchants’ Association. “To see a group of talented, young Philly foodies share their dream of celebrating the simplicity and beauty of home cooking with a national audience shows just how respected Philadelphia’s food scene has become across the country. Reading Terminal Market is proud to celebrate with Spoonful.”
