Something shiny (quite literally) and new is hitting King Street in Lancaster this summer! Max’s Eatery will start taking shape in the beginning of May when construction kicks off on what was once the space Aussie and the Fox occupied.
Max’s Eatery is something that has been banging around in the owners’ heads for quite some time, almost two years now, they say. It all started when Connor Patterson and Matt Titter — well known names in the Lancaster restaurant community — decided they wanted to own a restaurant together. They brought their wives in to be a part of the team and got right to work. The rest of the team was built out in the fall of 2017, with the addition of Doug Bernard, as he has a huge understanding of food and aesthetics.
The owners say they knew what they wanted: A classic American eatery concept, complete with late hours, milkshakes and even adult-only punch bowls to share. And they knew Lancaster was the spot for their dream. Patterson says, “Lancaster has been such a strong piece to my growth in my life, that ultimately we wanted to give back. Matt, too. Max’s is going to be a great fit to the downtown scene.”
Max’s is named after Titter’s son. “[He is] one of the most vibrant little humans I’ve ever met,” says Patterson. “He’s super-opinionated. We want a diner experience that Max wants to go to. We want you to be able to drink a boozy punch bowl drink, while Max enjoys a milkshake.”
Patterson says the first step on the renovation road to Max’s is a complete bar area redo, ultimately creating more seating. Changing the bar area will create about 30 more seats, increasing the capacity to about 115 people. They are also reimagining the previous color palette in the space, starting with a cleaner, Americana approach. The bright pink in the logo will transfer to other parts of the eatery, and there may even be a flamingo here and there. Imagine a retro style diner with steel and leather, but simplified.
Though Patterson didn’t want to divulge too much about the menu, he did mention “The Hefe,” which will be a sandwich/burrito with delicious meats, chicken and biscuits and, of course, burgers.
And while Max’s will not be open 24/7/365 like a classic diner, the team is planning to utilize the takeout window, which is currently housing BUZZ, for the late-night crowd. The takeout window might even open before the eatery as a pop-up. Stay tuned for that announcement!
“We want Max’s to be your everyday food,” says Patterson. “What should I eat for lunch? Dinner? After the bar? Max’s. Booze brunch? No better place than Max’s!”
Patterson and his team are aiming to open before Father’s Day this summer. Make sure you’re following Max’s Eatery on Facebook and Instagram for pop-up details, menu sneak peeks and opening date information.
Max’s is now hiring and hoping to fill about 40 different positions, and the team plans to have some pretty unique benefits for its staff. To apply, visit maxseatery.com or email Matt Titter directly at Matt.titter@properfoodgroup.
Once it opens, you can find Max’s Eatery at 38 W. King St. in Lancaster.
