The East Passyunk neighborhood is gaining a new eatery: Redcrest Fried Chicken. Soon, South Philly diners will be able to enjoy all of their fried chicken favorites and encounter some new faves as well!
Redcrest Fried Chicken will open at 1525 S. 11th Street at 11 a.m. on Thursday, February 1, when Chef Adam Volk will debut his fast casual eatery.
This 1,000-square-foot eatery will specialize in two varieties of fried chicken, chicken sandwiches, popcorn chicken, whole wings, side dishes, buttermilk soft serve ice cream, sundaes and desserts. Guests wishing to dine in can take a seat on one of the eight stools or, in warmer weather months, can head outside and sit at one of the outdoor tables.
Redcrest Fried Chicken’s menu features two varieties of fried chicken, including a signature buttermilk blend (chicken is brined with a blend of dried herbs and spices and buttermilk) and spicy curry (chicken is brined with Thai red curry, chiles and buttermilk). The fried chicken will be available in quarter, half and whole birds and can be ordered along with perfectly paired accompaniments, such as french fries, mashed potatoes, mac-and-cheese, coleslaw, seasonal vegetables, corn pudding and other side dishes.
In addition to fried chicken cooked two ways, the menu features popcorn chicken, whole-wings (four varieties) and chicken sandwiches, available in fried chicken or fried veggie-chicken patties. You can select Redcrest spicy, buttermilk, BBQ and Buffalo as their desired style of sandwich. And, be sure to order one or more of the daily-baked buttermilk biscuits to savor with your meal.
Even after a filling meal, dessert will be too difficult to pass up, once you see the soft serve ice cream and other desserts available at Redcrest. Dessert options include two varieties of soft serve ice cream, including a staple buttermilk vanilla ice cream and a rotating seasonal variety, with spiced apple cider taking the spotlight first. Sweets-seekers will also be able to indulge in a biscuit bread pudding, plus bread pudding and apple pie sundaes. Baked goods will be made in-house. Ice cream floats will also be available and be offered in root beer, creamsicle and cola varieties. Redcrest will serve a variety of beverages and sodas, including homemade iced tea, lemonade and half-and-half.
Redcrest Fried Chicken will be the third eatery owned and operated by Volk. He is the executive chef and partner for Esme, a full-service neighborhood restaurant in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, and partner for The Exley, a small neighborhood bar that offers craft beers, wines-by-the-glass and inventive house cocktails, and features a kitchen which focuses on snacks and sandwiches.
When it comes to his love of fried chicken, Volk says, “I like fried chicken, a lot. If asked one of my favorite food or preferred meals, it would always be fried chicken. I wanted to share that love with a larger audience and focus on one product and really do it well.” He added, “I also wanted to stop commuting to New York for work, and relocated to Philadelphia. I couldn’t see opening a full-service restaurant here right now, so the idea for Redcrest Fried Chicken was born.”
Giveaway alert: On opening day, February 1, from 5–7 p.m., Chef Volk will celebrate by giving away free fried chicken and mini chicken sandwiches (choice of one, one per person).
Redcrest Fried Chicken will be open Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m.–11 p.m., Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m.–midnight, and Sunday, 11 a.m.–10 p.m.
For those who wish to have their Redcrest Fried Chicken items delivered right to their door, Redcrest will launch delivery through GrubHub on Friday, February 2, just in time for Sunday’s big game. From that day forward, delivery services will be available seven days a week, 11 a.m.–11 p.m. except on Sundays, when delivery will be available11 a.m.–10 p.m.
