It’s looking like 2018 is shaping up to be another big year for new breweries in the Greater Philadelphia area: There’s Bald Bird Brewing opening soon in Eagleview; Suburban Brewing Co., which is rocking and rolling in Honey Brook; and Love City Brewing and the Goose Island Brewhouse, both recently opened in Philly. Now, we’re excited to share the news of Broker Brewing Co., a small craft brewery currently in the build-out phase in Skippack, Pa. (about 14 miles north of King of Prussia).
This startup is the brainchild of brothers Kevin and Basil Kershner, longtime home brewers who have always dreamed of co-owning a craft brewery together. In 2014 they decided that they were ready to make the move into pro brewing, and they created an LLC in 2015. In the years between then and now, they searched for the right space and were drawn to Skippack. “The village itself is awesome, and we thought the brewery would be the perfect complement … plus, we just like being out here,” Kevin says. During that time, Kevin and Basil have also been honing the craft and working on their recipes.
The brewery, located in a former auto body shop right at the intersection of West Skippack Pike and Route 113, has been under construction for over a year. And, while the road has been long, the Broker Brewing team is rounding the corner toward completion of the project. Earlier this week, they had their tanks delivered, which means, soon enough, on-site brewing can commence!
The Brothers Kershner brew beers that they see as “true to the style itself. Just good wholesome beer … when you think IPA, that’s what you’re getting,” Kevin says. During the R&D phase, they’ve worked on over 60 different recipes and they’ve adopted some of their favorites as flagship beers for the brand, including Bingbang Boom (“a dangerously hoppy IPA”), Belgian Exit and Hilltop Farmhouse saison.
The brewhouse itself will house a 15-barrel brewing system, and is the perfect size for growing into, Kevin notes. There will be a partial wall dividing the taproom space from the brewhouse, so guests will be almost within arm’s reach of the tanks. The taproom will include a bar and a main seating area with communal tables, some two-and four-tops, and a little lounge area. Behind the bar, you’ll eventually find 12 taps, though Kevin says they will likely open with five until everything is established. “Then, we can start adding in some fun stuff, some experiments and some seasonals,” he says.
The Broker Brewing team is aiming to open this summer, so stay tuned to PA Eats for more info, and keep up with Broker Brewing Co. on Instagram, too, as Kevin, Basil and their team draw nearer to opening the doors!
Once open, find Broker Brewing Co. at 4119 Skippack Pike in Skippack.
