Philly’s Love City Brewing just launched a new beer, Black is Beautiful, in collaboration with Harris Family Brewery (Harrisburg, PA) and Two Locals Brewing (Philadelphia, PA), the state’s first and only black-owned breweries (both still in the planning stages).
This trio of local breweries joined the nationwide initiative started by Weathered Souls, a black-owned brewery in San Antonio, Texas, in early July. The Black is Beautiful project is “a collaborative effort to raise awareness for the injustices people of color face daily and raise funds for police brutality reform and legal defenses for those who have been wronged.” The initiative invited breweries and brewers far and wide to participate in the collaboration by brewing a Black is Beautiful beer and donating 100% of the beer’s proceeds to local foundations or organizations that support equality and inclusion.
The Love City/Harris Family/Two Locals contribution started with Weathered Souls’ base recipe, then increased the ratio of chocolate malt and added 100 pounds of toasted coconut for a smooth 10% ABV stout with a light, nutty sweetness and huge espresso and dark chocolate notes. Love City will be donating 100% of the proceeds from this beer to Philly’s chapter of Black Lives Matter. You can purchase 4-packs of 16-ounce cans through Love City’s website or at select local bottle shops and beer distributors!
